Getting involved in the yoga world can be overwhelming. There’s terminology, posture alignment, the different styles of yoga (Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Power etc.) and most challenging of all — competition. Whether it’s with ourselves, where we think we should be, or, comparing ourselves to others. The truth is, to win, you must not compete. How can someone be in a pose with “ease and steadiness” if their mind is comparing the body?

And that’s why, in the very terms of competition and comparison, if you’re doing these things, then you’re not winning.
Because really winning in yoga is about “beating the game by not playing.” As my dear friend Angie has taught me.
Here are five tips you can use to remove competition from your yoga practice — right in the moment:

It’s also worth remembering, to not be hard on yourself. For example, in the photo above, that’s my first time going this far. The next day, I couldn’t go as deep as easily, because my body had changed.
AND THAT’S FINE! The reason it changes, is so we take a moment to notice.
This recognition, my friends, is the yogic dance of life. So be happy you’re doing yoga and keep experimenting, you’ll see soon enough!
