Within the past for years, my opinions have gradually transitioned from being ignorant and intolerant to many of the social issues facing the world at large to supporting and acting for them!
From considering big business profits as tollerable, ignorance to the blind sightedness of our food supply chain/production, lack of action within the political realm, acceptance of the mega rich, and a lack of information to make an informed opinion on environmental damage to the complete opposite.
Now, I am (more) informed on global environmental destruction, have a brief idea of just how corrupt the uber wealthy are, seriously skeptical of major business profits at the expense of the country not receiving taxes, more insight to the processes/modifications going on to our food, and strong involvement in the political arena (voting, writing letters, blasts on social media and signing petitions).
The majority of my opinion changes have started once I started consuming cannabis as this caused me to start consuming new content from Reddit and various subreddits in line with the aforementioned topics.
Because Reddit offers so many different news sources, my opinion was now being subjected to a very wide array of contirbutors, most of which were not mainstream news media who peddle the same information to create a narrative to their benefit.
My activism has largely come by means of participating in numerous petitions, surveys and voicing my opinion to elected representatives on key issues. One of these key issues was writing an official in Ottawa and hounding away at my opposition to the TPP, going to far as to say I will one day sit grand children on my knee and tell them they live in the world they do because of a decision our representatives made during this time and how I made an attempt to influence the outcome by rejecting it!
Signing up for a few initiatives have been instrumental in my participation of Canadian political decisions. There are three main organizations I participate in: Dogwood Initiative, Change.org and LeadNow.
Whenever I receive an email from these groups, I immediately open, read it and partake in any survey they have or sign the petitions they send my way.
LeadNow has been very skilled at retaining my interest, getting me to participate and even make a few small donations! They have pushed for changes to our political voting system to be representative instead of first past the post and other reforms like closing tax loop holes after the KPMG and Panama Papers scandals.
Dogwood Initiative has focused mostly on the environment out in BC. They've been focusing on issues such as the Kinder Morgan pipeline, Enbridge Keystone XL, LNG ports, coal exporting and have worked closely with Native American tribes. I have supported a few of these initiatives as well, both by signing petitions and making donations.
Most recently, I signed up for receiving petitions from change.org and have been active in signing a number of them, ranging from taking action after that gorilla was shot when a toddler fell into its cage to opposing the Bayer/Monsanto merger and more.
Our world is full of people doing good and bad. I feel we must act and voice our opinion against the interests who seek to extract our natural resources for a few to profit while the remainder of the populous suffers, steer major politicians to make evidence and science based policies and start working for voters and not corporations.
If special interest groups can lobby government, apply pressure, influence policy and attempt to control public narratives, then surely I can participate as well with organizations who are working for the population!
We have a responsibility to act, to take a stance, to prevent those who are the political, corporate and wealthy elite from forcing the world to its knees at their behest. We must fight to take our lives, independence and freedom back. Too many of our rights have been abolished as the general population succumbs to government fear mongering. The time is now, the choice is yours. If you do not act, you surrender your vote, and are forbidden from complaining down the line when you realize what your lack of action has cost you, and us.
