A personal introduction
Addressing Position Requirements
When a stranger told me to move to China in 45 days, I was taken aback. Yet approximately one week later, I had enrolled in a TESOL program, signed a job contract and bought a ticket to Beijing. Over the following weeks, I hosted 12 guests on Airbnb, visited family in two different cities and took a ski trip with my family. I sold my possessions, some within an hour online, completed the TESOL program, continued my job at Apple, purchased necessary gear to move abroad, completed all documentation and started a daily yoga practice.

As a registered yoga instructor, I’m well aware of the need to keep the entire body active during a session. Such mindfulness takes time to learn. From the position of the feet, keeping the core tight, and the shoulders back — yoga and surfing go hand-in-hand. You know what else aligns with yoga and surfing? Snowboarding! When shredding a mountain, hitting a jump, or carving fresh powder in backcountry, balance, foot control and core strength are paramount.
Now, although I haven’t tried surfing (yet), I do have 14 years of snowboarding under my belt. I’m not only willing to try, but also willing to bet, that my knowledge of both yoga and snowboarding translate very smoothly into surfing.
Are their surfing specific nuances? Of course. So, teach me! When I’m not being taught, I can help the surf team. And when I’m not doing either of those, I can teach or assist in the yoga classes! My intent is to live in as many countries as possible. Sri Lanka for nine months, or longer? Yeah, that sounds great!
Read what Richard had to say about my teaching, just a few months after I completed my yoga training. For more reviews, see what my former students in China had to say, and what those in Viet Nam thought.
I have this one down pat! With over 250 hours of presentations in the Apple Store on topics such as using iPad, iPhone, iMovie, Pages or other Apple software to middle-aged users, giving a presentation to 100 professors, deans and school staff on Gen Y mobile device usage in post-secondary institutions, teaching up to 25 students who are new English learners in China and Viet Nam, or leading a group of millennials through a yoga class — working with people of different ages, cultural backgrounds, languages and skills isn’t new to me. What’s the best way to make someone feel welcome and supported? Approaching them with a warm smile, a greeting and eye contact.
- Strong English speaking and writing skills
- An eye for captivating photographs
- Ability to learn new skills
Speaking elegantly and communicating well with others comes naturally. Being able to identify body language, address concerns and present solutions are essential for running a business in the wellness and hospitality industry. Regardless of which country I’m in, exhibiting patience, confidence and candour help me build trust, and yield interesting results.
Examples of building trust:
When I flew to India I met a guy on the flight who let me crash at his apartment. He had his personal driver chauffeur me around Delhi for the day, while waiting for my red-eye flight.
In Viet Nam, I met a restaurant owner who offered me one of her apartment units for a 15% discount, no deposit and no utilities just a couple weeks after meeting.
In Hong Kong I helped a family with their kids at the beach and they invited me to join them for lunch and drinks.
I’ve published 42 editions of Solo Trip Report — a travelogue-series about working, living and travelling abroad. Click here to get started and see for yourself what my life abroad has been like these past two years. From road trips, to seeing fatal motorbike accidents, camping on beaches, hiking in Hong Kong, going on Safari in the Indian jungle, meeting Canadians who lived 30 minutes away from me in Canada, going through crisis, becoming vegetarian, encountering romance, or climbing waterfalls, I cover it all!
An Example of Learning New Skills:
Read about how I’ve learned to use automation websites IFTTT and Zapier to lighten my digital workload here.
My Photography Style:
As shown below, I can capture eye-catching photographs of nature, portraits, animals and food, in a variety of lighting situations. All photos shot on iPhone. Making sure Talalla Surf & Yoga, the guests and staff, as well as the surrounding nature look not only beautiful, but peaking viewers interest on social media will be a cinch.
I took initiative to survey 100 students about the school wifi, presented it to the Chief Technology Officer and was offered a position as a student liaison for a committee making recommendations to management about technology spending.
The following year, I proposed a Twitter pilot whereby each class had its own account and hashtag. Teachers would post questions, homework and assignment details. Students would be allowed to ask questions and answers polls, live in class, to engage non-native speakers.
During the end of my schooling, I worked in a private equity firm finding potential companies to acquire and participated in conference calls between investors and management.
I’ve also been managing my own investment funds over the past seven years and taking advantage of new opportunities in robo-funds (automated by robots) and crypto-currency investments. At the same time, I paid off all debt at the end of 2016!
The point is, while I can easily communicate with people, have travelled in a variety of countries and can apply my creative eye for detail (such as this website), I understand that a business is a business and needs to be run as such.
